Like you, seeing the devastation in Port Au Prince stirs up in me the desire to serve those in need -“A Scout is helpful.” In my book, “A Scout is…” I talk about my time in Haiti, teaching First Aid to the Haitians so they could care for the people in their communities.

Early this week I got a call from a dear friend of mine, Danny Thomas, Director of Harvest International.  Harvest has been helping the needs of the people of Haiti for over twenty five years.  The long-term members of Harvest have been serving even before the massive quake and, now, the cry for supplies is even greater!

“Can the Boy Scouts help, Todd?  I need tents.  In one location we have about 1,000 people sleeping in the open.  Our people could sure use the assistance.   Can the Boy Scouts help?” pleaded Danny.

Fellow Scouts, Scouters & readers, I make this appeal to you to demonstrate that “A Scout is Helpful.”  Danny needs to provide tents, in good working order, to the people of Haiti so their basic need of shelter is taken care of while they rebuild.  If you are like me, you may have a spare tent that you can give, plus the ability to purchase at least one additional tent to send to Harvest.

I can’t do a lot, but I can do something.  With your help we can accomplish much!  In the spirit of Scouting, let’s demonstrate our motto and “do a good turn” today. They need the tents as soon as possible.
